The French “passé – présent – futur”

French verbs can express actions in the past, the present, or the future.

Examples :

je mange (présent), j’ai mangé (passé), je mangerai (futur).

In French, tense (temps verbal) situates an action on the timeline: before the moment of speaking (passé), at the moment of speaking (présent), or after it (futur).

Each tense follows specific morphological patterns and conveys aspectual nuances such as completed action, ongoing action, or projected action.

Mastering these forms is essential for temporal coherence and accurate verbal agreement.

1. le présent

Expresses an action happening now, a habit, or a general truth.

Example : Je marche dans la rue.

2. le passé

Expresses an action that has already happened.

Example : J’ai fini le travail.

3. le futur

Expresses an action that will happen later.

Example : Je partirai demain.

4. les marqueurs temporels

Words that indicate time and help identify the tense.

Example : hier, aujourd’hui, demain.

Je lis un livre.

J’ai lu un livre.

Je lirai un livre.
