Les groupes verbaux (verb groups)
Les groupes verbaux (verb groups) are the categories used to classify French verbs according to their infinitive ending.
Examples:
parler, finir, prendre.
In French grammar, verbs are divided into groups based on their morphology and conjugation patterns.
The first group includes regular verbs ending in ‑er (except aller).
The second group includes regular verbs ending in ‑ir whose present participle ends in ‑issant. The third group includes all other verbs: verbs in ‑ir that are not part of the second group, verbs in ‑re, verbs in ‑oir, and irregular verbs.
1. le premier groupe
This group contains regular verbs ending in ‑er (except aller).
Example: parler is a first‑group verb.
2. le deuxième groupe
This group contains regular verbs ending in ‑ir whose present participle ends in ‑issant.
Example: finir → finissant.
3. le troisième groupe
This group contains all irregular verbs and verbs that do not follow the patterns of the first two groups.
Example: prendre, aller, voir.
Elle chante chaque matin (1er groupe).
Nous réussissons cet examen (2e groupe).
Ils attendent leurs amis (3e groupe).
Tu sors ce soir (3e groupe).
Il boit un café (3e groupe).
Elles lisent très vite (3e groupe).
Je marche un peu (1er groupe).
Vous ouvrez la fenêtre (3e groupe).
